Assessment Issues

Many different types of assessment were needed in the CLASS™ language courses (speaking, listening, writing, etc.). This caused some complicated problems for the creation of exams. Computer-graded portions of the assessment required different software than the notebook, which was the tool used for the writing and teacher-graded questions. Audio and video proved to be extremely difficult and time-consuming to include in the assessments, especially in the notebook, which is stored on a different server than the rest of the course. Also, the number of video/audio files can slow the loading of the page, and this is even more pronounced in the ‘Notebook’.

Assessments that include recording and sending capabilities were another problem. CLASS™ language course assessments were in two parts. One part contained the computer-graded (objective) portion of the test plus the sound files and/or video for the listening questions. The other portion contained the speaking and writing (teacher graded) parts of the test. The directions were helpful for explaining this rather confusing aspect of the course!
