Record and Play-back IssuesProbably the greatest challenge in the language courses was finding a good way for students to record and play back their voices and to send them to the teacher for grading. Much time and money was spent in researching a way to accomplish this in a user-friendly manner. The CLASS™ production partner, Nebraska Educational Telecommunications (NET) created a simple user-friendly program to accomplish this very thing, but it wouldn’t work in Internet Explorer™. (It worked fine in Netscape™! You may have heard this before!) After much time, money, and energy had been spent, CLASS™ ended up using an off-the-shelf product called “PureVoice™.” CLASS™ had to sign a contract with the company to be able to put their product in our courses. This product was not as simple to use as the one created by NET; the icon had to sit on the students’ desktop rather than be installed in the course itself, and it took several steps to send a file to the teacher. It actually attached a sound file to an email. It was set up as much as possible ahead of time so that the file would attach to WebBoard™, the communication technology used in CLASS™ courses. A big concern was about ease of use in the ESL courses where students wouldn’t understand the directions! Instructions with graphics were developed to help explain the process in the ‘Course Guide’, and in the ‘Course Guide for Helpers’, which also accompanied the courses. This note was put in a window off the toolbar also so students could access it any time they wanted to record their voice.
