Buy or Lease Equipment (Development and Production)

There is a tremendous difference in how you approach a decision on equipment -- based only in part on available resources, volume of content, number of courses, and expertise. There is no one right answer for everyone. Consider at least the following:

  • dollars available at startup
  • how quickly will you start after acquiring equipment
  • how many courses do you plan to put on the web
  • how many people to you have for how long to do this project
  • what is your personal or available expertise
  • what would you do with the equipment if management decides to stop offering courses on line
  • how easy is the equipment upgraded and repaired
  • what maintenance money is available
  • what LMS are you considering
  • what do your students and teachers use for equipment
  • what are your peers and support groups using
  • what do the trade journals report about the trends

Why be concerned: There are a ton of other issues that are related to this problem, including:

  • maintenance
  • startup costs (buy servers, pay for hosting)
  • support (administrative, for users, of content, internet, network, political, etc)
  • migration path
