Student-centered versus Linear versus Non-linearTechnology will greatly affect the decision of whether to use:
The discussion may be better suited for the ‘Instructional Design’ section, but technology will greatly affect your choices. If you want to create a completely open system, odds are good that existing learning management systems (LMSs) won’t satisfy your needs. Initially, CLASS™ had a completely open system. Students could a(and often were encouraged to) bounce from topic to topic, following whatever thread they felt was important in a pure constructivist environment. This gave way to a more structured environment, which finally gave way to a structured environment with student-centered tracking. Today, CLASS™ would not create a completely open system just because the technology allows such. Instead, attention would be paid to the best instructional design practices, and that would determine what system to use. The pedagogical justifications for each style is in another section
of this presentation. But, if you are an administrator trying to decide
on a particular LMS, or if you’re simply grappling with the decision
about using an LMS altogether, then this discussion is important. Most
LMS’s build courses in a very structured, very linear manner
that discourages (and possibly disallows) non-linear learning. For
some instructional designers, this might be unsavory. Copyright 2004 - University of Nebraska Board of Regents - All Rights Reserved |
