Browser and Platform Support

Per the terms of the grant, CLASS™ courses supported as many platform/browser combinations as possible. While the courses worked well with most combinations, the Macintosh™ (Mac)/Internet Explorer™ (IE) combination consistently caused problems. For example, the tracking software worked well in all platform/browser combinations except for Mac/IE. This was due in large part to the way that the Mac OS interprets IE commands, especially when it runs across Java-language commands. In addition, many hypertext markup language (HTML) and JavaScript™ codes are different depending on the platform/browser combination.

Although supporting every conceivable platform/browser combination will expand your potential audience, it will also limit what you can do. While it is advantageous to support as many platform/browser combinations as possible, it is necessary to realize that supporting everything is neither possible nor desirable. Know your audience, their technology, AND their technological expertise.
