InteractivityOne goal of the CLASS™ courses was to provide ample interactivity with the subject matter to encourage interest and reinforce learning. It was acknowledged that certain areas of the curriculum require more interactive types of activities than others. By their very nature, some classes (such as math and language) require more skills practice than others (such as history and literature) in order to master the concepts. However, all teams worked to provide as much interactivity with course material as possible within time, money, and space constraints. Discussion Groups Course design in the CLASS™ Project includes discussion groups as one interactive component. Students are able to bounce their ideas back and forth. Courses treat discussion groups differently. In some courses, participation in discussion groups are required for completion of the course, but not graded. In some courses, discussion groups are graded by quality and quantity of responses. In other courses, they are optional.
Discussion groups that are required or graded are quite a burden on
the teacher who has to continually check and keep track of student
responses. Discussion groups that are optional may get less participation.
Do students benefit enough from the opportunity to interact with each
other in discussion groups to make the teacher time spent worthwhile?
