Web Sites

Working with web sites created another set of permission problems because webmasters and web managers varied in how they wanted their web site used. Most webmasters and web managers did not care if the University of Nebraska - Lincoln (UNL), Division of Continuing Studies (DCS), Research and Development Unit (R&D) CLASS™ Project linked directly to their sites. However, some of them wanted the course to link to their site's homepage, as opposed to a specific web page where the referenced material was located. This made it far more complicated for the students because they had to navigate through the site in order to find the appropriate document or most pertinent information.

Web sites also tend to be less stable than other mediums. Consequently, the course development teams began using a separate "Page of Links" that could be accessed off of the toolbar to make it easier to check and make changes to links referenced in the course content. The Quality Assurance personnel made periodic checks on each course's Page of Links.

In the early stages of the Project, CLASS™ requested the right to cache sites that were particularly important in some of the courses in order to guarantee their availability. Most webmasters and web managers did not object to having their sites cached, but a few saw their sites as works-in-progress so asked that the development teams only link to particular documents on their site. After the for-profit company became involved with the project, CLASS™ found it very difficult to maintain its caching privileges, so the development teams decreased their dependence on existing web materials and simply linked to relevant sites.

For the most part, images within a web site are considered to be separate from the text with regards to permission rights. Therefore, CLASS™ had to use the process discussed earlier for graphics in order to include pictures, drawings, or other graphics from web sites. Generally, this did not create a serious problem unless the targeted web site had not been granted permission to use the image(s) before placing it/them on its pages.
